Pamukkale

Pamukkale was our stop on 1 September 2022, one of the most surprising landscapes of the whole trip.

The travertines

From a distance, Pamukkale looks like a hill covered in snow or cotton, which is what its name means: Cotton Castle. It is made of white travertine terraces and pools, formed by hot springs full of limestone flowing down the hill.

Hierapolis

On the same plateau are the ruins of Hierapolis, a Greek and Roman spa city famous for its huge necropolis full of tombs and sarcophagi. Pamukkale and Hierapolis have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.

Tip: You have to walk barefoot on the travertines, so bring something to carry your shoes in. The white rock is very bright, so sunglasses help too.
