Ghent

Ghent is a medieval city of canals, towers and step-gabled houses, smaller and calmer than Bruges but just as beautiful. We spent a day here during our winter trip in February 2025.

Tip: The prices and opening hours here are the ones we noted when we planned the trip. Check them before you go.

1. Gravensteen

The Castle of the Counts, a real medieval castle with a moat right in the center. Finish on the rooftop, for a 360 degree view and one of the few places where you can see all of Ghent's medieval towers. Open from 10am to 6pm.

2. Graslei and Korenlei

The two quays facing each other across the river, lined with old guild houses: probably the most beautiful place in the city.

3. St Michael's Bridge

From this bridge you can see Ghent's three medieval towers in a row: St Nicholas' Church, the Belfry and St Bavo's Cathedral. Bring your camera.

4. St Nicholas' Church

Built in the local Scheldt Gothic style. Free, open from 10am to 4pm.

5. The Belfry

The tallest belfry in Belgium. Climb to the top for the view and to see the copper dragon that has watched over the city since the 14th century. Entrance was €11.

6. St Bavo's Cathedral

Home of the Ghent Altarpiece by Jan van Eyck, one of the greatest works of art in the world. Entrance was €12.50.

7. Geraard the Devil's Castle

A 13th-century stone castle by the water, with a great name.

8. St Bavo's Abbey

The ruins of an old abbey. It is not open every day, so check before you go.
