The2Planners in Pisa, Italy - The Leaning Tower of PisaCITYGUIDE Pisa, Italy - The2PlannersPisa is a legendary city and one of the most explored cities in northern Italy. This is a famous destination, as tourists often stop there when traveling to Florence, to get a look at the most famous tower in the world. However, it is a fantastic city to stay in and offers a great deal more sites than just the legendary leaning tower. For those wishing to visit Pisa, this city has a fantastic array of beautiful historical buildings and indeed it boasts several historical churches.

“Italy, and the spring and first love all together should suffice to make the gloomiest person happy.”
Bertrand Russell

We did visit this city en-route to Florence, attracted by the mediatic and photogenic Tower of Pisa. We were not expecting to find the marvelous city we found! We dedicated merely one morning to explore the city, and for us, it was enough and allowed us to rest a bit to keep exploring and recharge batteries to Florence. One disadvantage of the city is the fact most famous architectural monuments are not free of charge, so it can be a quite expensive visit. During our stay, we decided no to enter in any of the attractions, for economic reasons.

Where to go? What to see? What to eat? In this city guide, we present you the route we did in the Summer of 2019, a trip we absolutely loved and think its a must for young couples.

the2planners 1.  Piazza dei Miracoli

When arriving Pisa, the best option is to first explore the beautiful Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), as your sight will be certainly captivated by the magnificent Tower, the Cathedral, and the Baptistery. The marble whiteness of these monuments resting on the grassy carpet of the piazza treats visitors to a unique sight, with such harmony. But Pisa has a great deal to offer besides the famous piazza.

Don’t just admire it from below: the climb up the tower is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, however a little expensive, in our opinion. If you decide to climb, you will enjoy both the incredible climb as well as the amazing views from the top. Only 40 people at a time are allowed inside the tower and you need to be prepared to climb 300 (old) stairs. So make an online reservation, probably several weeks in advance is the better option.

Take some time to explore this point, as this is the busiest area, filled with tourists in strange positions to get the pictures with the Pisa tower we all know.

Once you have admired the monuments in the piazza from all angles, continue your visit to the other ex-libris in the city. We suggest you take a walk through these beautiful streets from where you can admire the panoramic view over the river and its surroundings.

Another major sight is the beautiful Piazza dei Cavalieri, only a few minutes’ walk from the Piazza dei Miracoli. Designed by Giorgio Vasari, it was the center of political life during the Middle Ages and a symbol of Medici rule over the city from the Renaissance. The palace is located in the Knights Square, the second most popular square to encounter in Pisa

Standing on the south bank of the Arno is the peculiar little Church of Santa Maria della Spina, a remarkable example of Gothic art in Europe.
